Please stop adding unsourced content, as you did to Paul Gallagher (footballer). This contravenes Wikipedia's policy on verifiability. If you continue to do so, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:08, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm Jim1138. I noticed that you made a change to an article, List of international goals scored by Wayne Rooney, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Jim1138 (talk) 09:52, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, I'm new to Wikipedia editing so I don't know how to properly add sources etc.. Here's a video of the highlights from the match in question, along with a link to Wikipedia's own page on own goals. Most notably, this paragraph is significant:

The Laws do not stipulate any rules or procedures for crediting goals to players, and indeed such records are not a compulsory part of the game.[12] In 1997 FIFA issued detailed guidelines for crediting own goals, recognising the increasing commercial importance of statistics such as top scorer awards and fantasy football.[12] The guidelines state that credit for scoring is decided by the referee, or match commissioner if present; and "[a] defender's intervention must be deliberate in order for an own goal to be registered against him".[12] Regarding a shot which deflects or ricochets into the goal off a defender, some sources credit the score to the attacker; others count them as own goals; for others it depends on whether the original shot was off target; others are more nuanced.[12] There was controversy in 2013 when the FA Premier League credited Tim Howard with an own goal when a shot came off the post, hit him in the back, and went in.[13]

To add a citation see help:referencing for beginners. You can use wp:RefToolbar/2.0 it's available on the default Wiki editor. Just click on "> Cite". See wp:verifiability if you want the gory details as to why citations are needed. See wp:cite for details on citations, and wp:reliable source on how to determine if a source is usable on Wikipedia. Sports is not really my thing, so would you please add the citation? Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 10:33, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
