And let us also point ot that the area is not a peninsula either. Peninsula is defined in all English dictionaries as a piece of land surrounded with the same body of water and connected to the mainland with an isthmus. Isthmus is by definition a thin strip of land connecting two larger bodies of land. There is no isthmus connecting Southeastern Europe with the rest of it. Southeastern Europe is an integral part of the rest of the continent. Not some imaginary peninsula.
In the light of that, references to the "balkan" have been replaced with the appropriate and correct "Southeastern Europe" term. Also corrected a few minor spelling errors, but there are quite a few left in the text. There is a mixture of US spelling, mostly in the words such as "paleo...), and the incorrect use of the "z" instead of "s" in words such as "standardization", or "systematization". While such spelling may be fine in the US, the spelling should be kept consistent with the UK spelling rules as it is clear from the rest of the text that that is the language (intended to be) used throughout the text.
