Daryush Shokof is an Iranian artist, Film-maker who was born in Tehran Iran in June 25,1954. he left Iran in late seventies to continue studies in the USA. he graduated with a degree of Mathematics and Physics from E.N.M.U., and a masters degree in Management from U.D. Texas. His first encounter with the arts was copying a work of Picasso.s head of a woman at the age of 8 and on the wall of their dinning room. his father encouraged him and got him a teacher so he could continue painting. He also started writing film scripts by copying works of great film personalities such as Fellini, and Pasolini, and Sartre at the age of 11. he had said in a press conference at Locarno Film Festival that he had shown a copy of a work by Sartre and showed the writing to his father as his own at the age of 9. the proud father was so mesmerized with the script that he showed the writing to many people around and soon a crowd of people thought of the boy to be a Genius. Since he had changed some of the names and situations no one could suspect who the work could really belong to as he presented 3 works as such from each Fellini, Pasolini, and Sartre. www.IFVC.com He continues in the same press conference that ever since that lie he had to write texts matching such great minds of the time, and was obviously never successful to get any of the works printed and or sold. However, he added that stealing and or copying works of the great minds would always help one to add some or even a little touch to the original works that would help a creative person to take form and shape and progress. He soon moved to New York after his master,s degree and started a career as an artist by drawings and small paintings. His early drawings were influenced by Saul Steinberg, and his painting owed much to Dali. He almost always continued writing alongside the arts, until one day he just packed his bags and left to Europe to continue a career to become a full time artist. He made some exhibitions in Germany before 1985 when he finally found his style and was soon recognized as a dedicated artist in a very advanced world art scene at the time in Cologne, Germany. He coined the term Maximalism in the arts in an exhibition in 1990 at Gallery Schulze in Colgone ,Germany. He later wrote a manifest to the thoughts of Maximalism and more shows were exhibited under Maximalism including works by many prestgious artists at the time; Milan Kunc, Mark Kostabi, Jeff Koons, Robert Green, Wainer Vaccari, Salvo, Marcello Jori, Jim Dine,Jan Knapp were amongst names that contributed works at different Maximalist exhibitions world wide. Shokof finally got involved in the film material through a video installation which soon gave way to making films with an extraordinary turn out ever since 1990.
