Prof. Dr. Pia Schober

Prof. Dr. Pia Schober is a distinguished sociologist specializing in social policy, gender, and family studies. She currently serves as the Chair of Microsociology at the Department of Sociology, University of Tübingen, Germany. Her extensive research contributes to understanding the intersections of social policy, family dynamics, and gender. Together with colleagues at the University of Tübingen, Schober is also exploring the nuanced complexities of gender/sex-differences at the intersection of sociology and neuroscience.

Education and Career

Prof. Schober's academic journey began with an MSc in International Business from Vienna University of Economics in 2002, followed by an MSc in Economics in 2003 from the same institution. She then pursued an MSc in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh, UK, in 2005. She completed her doctorate in Social Policy at the London School of Economics in 2009, mentored by Dr. Sigle-Rushton and Prof. Lewis. Her professional career includes roles as a postdoctoral researcher in Sociology at the University of Cambridge (2009-2012) and at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) (2012-2016). Since 2016, she has been a Full Professor of Sociology at the University of Tübingen.

Research Interests

Prof. Schober’s research focuses on gender development across the life course, family behaviours and parenting in different political and normative contexts. She explores how public policies, social norms and socio-economic factors influence family behaviors, gender beliefs and practices, contributing to broader debates on social equity and family wellbeing. In her research, she frequently applies quantitative longitudinal analyses and survey experiments.

Engagement in the Research System

Prof. Schober is actively involved in academic governance and research networks. Since 2022 she has been a member of the expert commission for 10th Family Report of the German government. She has been a board member of the European Social Policy Network Association since 2022 and serves on the International Editorial Advisory Boards of "Comparative Population Studies" and "Families, Relationships, Societies." Additionally, she has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation "Kinder forschen" since 2015. Her roles also include department leadership and international exchange coordination at the University of Tübingen.

Coordinating Functions in Collaborative Grants and Consortia

Prof. Schober plays a pivotal role in coordinating various collaborative research initiatives. She is a key contributor to several projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), including the "Doing Transitions" Research Training Group and studies on family policy, gender ideologies, and parental gender socialization.

Supervision

After graduation, some of her previous PhD students continued in research and teaching positions in academia, whereas others took up research and data analysis positions in government departments and in the private sector. She also mentored two postdoctoral Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellows, supporting early-career researchers in their academic development.
