Rushworth Nutt was an American physician and planter.
Early life
[edit]Rushworth Nutt was born in Virginia.[1] He had a brother, Rittenhouse Nutt.[2]
Career
[edit]In 1805, he went exploring many states on horseback, no less than his home state of Virginia, but also Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.[1] Natchez Trace
Nutt visited Egypt with his brother Rittenhouse in the 1830s.[2]
He purchased the Laurel Hill Plantation in Rodney, Jefferson County, Mississippi.
He experimented with several breeds of cotton.[3] In 1833, he invented a new cotton hybrid known as Petit Gulf cotton.[3]
Personal life
[edit]Nutt married Mary Ker, the daughter of David Ker. They had a son, Haller Nutt, who resided at Longwood.[1]
