[edit]I work as a caregiver and love what I do. Health is my greatest passion and I’m fascinated by all things science. I’m going to school hoping to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This degree will open many doors for me and I’ll be able to contribute a lot to the healthcare system here in the U.S.. I also love hiking and being in nature. Exposure to nature is linked to numerous health benefits.[1]
My Wikipedia Interests
[edit]Someday I'll be skilled enough in writing to make my own edits here on Wikipedia. This would be such a gratifying thing to be able to do. I’d hope to then aid in the effort to fix Wikipedia’s gender imbalance. By the time I’m finished with school and working in the field of medicine I'll have things to add to Wikipedia articles that are about healthcare.
Article Evaluation
[edit]I moved to Snohomish, Washington from California last year. I soon learned the name “Snohomish” is derived from a tribe that lived here prior to colonization and I was intrigued to learn more about them. I visited the “Snohomish People” article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the majority of the content is not cited, when cited it references old sources or dead links, and information is lacking in the “history” section.
Citations
[edit]Articles that reference history are supposed to be factual, with appropriate and reliable sources. Great Wikipedia articles effectively source each historical fact. Sadly, most of what is written in this article is not cited at all. Since I don’t know if this was authored by a historian, it is difficult to find this article credible.
Old and Dead Links
[edit]The citations in this article are either 10+ years old or include dead links. It could be that the information is verifiable with alternate sources, but not in its current state. Maintaining updated citations is extremely important as our society evolves. Furthermore, misinformation regarding the history and culture of Native American people is common, specifically in schools and textbooks.[2] It is especially important for an article about Native American history to be cited with up-to-date and relevant links.
Information Left Out
[edit]This article briefly describes places this tribe inhabited and encounters they had with traders and missionaries. However, nothing is mentioned about the tribe’s culture and how they lived, only that they were supposedly, “fishermen, hunters, and gatherers”. All human beings deserve historically accurate representation and more depth than this 315 word glimpse.
Conclusion
[edit]This article left me underwhelmed. While it provides an unbiased, grammatically correct snippet of the Snohomish people, I can't say that I learned anything meaningful. It lacks citations for appropriate sources and needs to include more historical information about the Snohomish people’s culture and legacy.
