Etymology
[edit]Although Humulus has more of an uncertain origin, Lupulus comes from the Latin word for wolf, lupus. Humulus is thought to originate from the Low-German word "humela," which means hop. [1]
Description
[edit]Humulus Lupulus can grow to be 10 meters tall and live for 20 years. It’s leaves are opposite and have 3-5 lobes. The staminate flowers do not have petals, while the pistillate flowers’ petals completely over the fruit. The cones found on female plants are called “strobilil.” [2] The fruit of Humulus Lupulus is an achene. Lupulin secreting glands are concentrated on the fruit. [1][3] Hops can cause dermatitis to some who handle them. It is thought that about 1 in 3000 people are affected by this. [3]
