Anne Brown
Early life
[edit]Brown's father was a publisher.[1]
Brown studied in Germany and learned its language.[1]
In her twenties, Brown lived in Paris. She travelled to various regions of France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, writing a journal during these trips. Upon her return to Edinburgh, she regularly visited London and accompanied her brother James on trips to continental Europe.[2]
Meeting Brown
[edit]Anne first met George Brown in the fall of 1862. Brown was visiting the United Kingdom and her brother, Tom Nelson, invited him to visit their home in Edinburgh.[1] George moved into a residence nearby and began courting Brown.[2] Five weeks after their first meeting, on November 27,[3] they were wed at the Nelson's home.[4] The couple departed to Toronto just over a week later.[5]
