History
[edit]QOVES Studio was founded by Shafee Hassan In 2019, it was founded as an initiative to educate audiences on photoshop manipulation and worrying trends in social media.[6] [1]. QOVES It first gained popularity through its Instagram Vs Reality Series which has since then gained millions of views [2]. QOVES switched to A.I and plastic surgery consultations in 2020, noticing a gap in the market as patients were underwhelmed with their surgery results or went in poorly educated on their expectations.[7] [14]. [8]
Since then, QOVES had launched Its popular Facial Aesthetics Report which analyses patient faces top down through a telemedicine consultation with a medical professional and provides a 24 page report to guide cosmetic or non-invasive surgery.[2][3][9] [9][8][11]. The report uses a compilation of literature reviews and studies to develop a more objective method of evaluating facial attractiveness and physical beauty to provide usable feedback.[10] [13][14]. The core tenants of beauty in the Aesthetic Report are inspired by the central thesis provided by Gilian Rhodes on The Evolutionary Psychology of Beauty.[11][14][15]. Future iterations of QOVES A.I. Assessment Software use Generative Adversarial Networks (GANS) to improve ethnic diversity in training datasets by artificially creating highly realistic faces rather than relying on real images.[7] [14].
Hassan told MIT Technology review in a podcast that QOVES was created in response to 1997 Gattaca, where a person can determine their fate through determinism. “With how far modern medicine has come, I didn’t see any reason for not evaluating your flaws, because there are ways you can fix it.” – Shafee Hassan. [1] “The whole point is we want to clear how people see surgery into being a more positive tool of social mobility, because your looks influence the way you're treated, the amount of money you earn, how your socioeconomic status can move up or down”.[12][1] [6]
As of 2021, QOVES Studio has 20 employees [1]. (Will add after approval)
The company ethos revolves around answering the age old question of ‘what makes a face attractive’ and weekly videos on ‘facial aesthetics’ on their YouTube channel attempts to dissect the intricacies that shape human mating decisions and physical beauty. This also showcased Instagram Vs Reality Series on its YouTube Channel at 300,000 subscribers to educate audiences on facial aesthetics, anthropology, facial development, and cosmetic surgery.
In 2021, QOVES AU also partnered with Leo Olsen Guillot to create QOVES Agency. QOVES Studio belongs to its parent company QOVES AU, which holds QOVES Laboratory, QOVES Skincare and QOVES Aesthetics.[13][14]
Criticism
[edit]QOVES Studio is one of 5 brands under the QOVES AU holding, which use and develop Artificial Intelligence programs to help clinicians in their cosmetic consultations. The Facial Assessment Tool developed in 2020, has come under criticism of promoting Eurocentric beauty standards in their assessment of cosmetic flaws. Critics have claimed that mixing beauty and artificial intelligence only promotes existing biases in our society that are reflected into a previously untapped sector of beauty.[15][16][17] [3][4][5]. [6][11][3]. The usage of ‘scientific’ standards of beauty is still heavily contested as many still believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that QOVES is assessing beauty by artistic standards rather than objectively scientific.[18] [16].
