Véronique Garçon

[edit]

Véronique Garçon is a French oceanographer and marine researcher specialized in marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics.[1] Her research is based on the analysis of satellite and observations, combined with the development of biogeochemical models and biogeochemical sensors.By January 2019, Véronique has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in highly cited journals.[1]

Throughout her scientific career, Garçon served on several national regional and international committees, actively contributing to development and implementation of activities furthering the coherence of marine biogeochemistry observations and modelling. Her enthusiastic and pro-active engagement in coordination was specifically relevant when she took on many major roles, including her 10 years service for Scientific Committee of the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project of which she was the Chair until the end of 2017.[2]

Education

[edit]

Véronique Garçon graduated from University of Paris VII in Environmental Sciences (Energy and Pollutions) in 1981 and then became a post-doc fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1982 to 1985 where she worked at the Civil Engineering Department in Sally Chisholm's Laboratory.[1]

Career

[edit]

From 1985 and until 1998 Véronique Garçon worked as a scientist at the CNRS in Paris, and Toulouse, France for Jean François Minster’s Laboratory. [1]

Recruited as an Early Career scientist at CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique) in 1985, she worked at Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris then moved down to Toulouse with a sabbatical stay at Princeton University in 1995-1996.[1]

In 1998 she became a Senior Scientist for of SOLAS, Scientific Committee of the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (also called LEGOS for Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiales) in Toulouse[3], where she is the Head of team Physical Dynamics/Marine biogeochemistry. Her research themes within the group SYSCO2 for Complex Coupled Systems aim towards understanding and quantifying processes governing fluxes of carbon, oxygen and associated biogeochemical elements in the ocean, using in situ tracers observations, remotely-sensed data, coupled physical biogeochemical modeling and data assimilation technics. She is also deeply involved in oceanic biogeochemical climatic monitoring via electrochemical sensors development. She is currently chair of the SOLAS program and international member of IOC's Global Ocean Oxygen Network (GO2NE).[4] Garçon has overseen 9 thesis. [5]

Awards

[edit]

Véronique Garçon was the winner of the 2017 Anton Bruun Medal[9] for oceanography[10]. This international distinction rewards her scientific career during which Véronique Garçon helped to better understand the flow of biogeochemical compounds in the global and regional ocean.[3]
