Holyoke and Westfield Rail Road Company (1869)

[edit]

The rail road was originally chartered in 1869 to carry passengers and freight from the mills in Holyoke to Westfield and foster competitive shipping rates than offered by the Connecticut River Railroad. [1] [2] The charter was applied by locals, J.C. Parsons, Edwin Chase of Holyoke, and Cutler Laflin of Westfield.

Once the road was completed in 1871, it was immediately leased to the New Haven & Northampton Company.

Soon after the railroad became part of the The New York, New Haven and Hartford system.
