AIC Yellowjackets

[edit]

The AIC–UMass hockey rivalry is a college hockey rivalry between the Yellowjackets of American International and Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The latest series has been dubbed The Battle for the 413, and has been also previously known as Battle of I-91. As of 2024, UMass has won the last 2 meetings.

History

[edit]

The first ever game between UMass and AIC was held in December of 2008 at the Mullins Center. The (8-6) Minutemen was coached by Don Cahoon, and the (4-13) Yellowjackets was coach by Gary Wright. UMass would go on to win 4-0, freshmen Matt Irwin scored 26 seconds into the game, defensemen Justin Braun earned his first shorthanded goal of his career, and goals also came from locals Chris Davis of Simsbury, Conn. and T.J. Syner of Springfield. Toot Cahoon earned his 121st victory, making him the winningest coach in program history.[2]
