Wayne is an American crime drama television series created by Nathan Holton, produced by HBO Entertainment and later Holton Studios starting from the show's third season and based on characters published by DC Comics and appearing in the Batman franchise, primarily those of Damian and Bruce Wayne. The series aired on HBO from October 8, 2018 to December 18, 2023, with over six seasons and three television specials, comprising a total of 132 episodes (144 also counting the specials). The series features an ensemble cast that includes Nathan Holton as Damian Wayne, Luke Grimes as Bruce Wayne, Cody Christian as Richard Grayson, Sawyer Sharbino as Timothy Drake, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Ben McKenzie as Commissioner James Gordon, Saxon Sharbino as Barbara Lee Gordon among others. The series is intended as a stand-alone sequel to the 2014 television series, Gotham, being set 21 years after the series finale and focusing on the life of the Bat-Family living in Gotham City. The show takes elements from the police-procedural genre and from various Batman stories, including videogames and movies while also including an original take on the characters by Nathan Holton and Christopher Nolan, the two lead writers.

Development for a sequel series based on Batman began in August 2017, when Nathan Holton made a deal with HBO to serve as a writer and producer. In October 2017, HBO originally ordered 12 episodes for its first season before expanding it to 24 in March 2018. Filming primarily took place across New York City. A prequel series, Pennyworth, starring Jack Bannon as a younger version of the iteration of Alfred Pennyworth portrayed by Sean Pertwee in Gotham and Wayne, began airing on HBO in July 2019.

It received massive critical praise and is considered one of the best TV series of all times.

Development

[edit]

In August 2017, Holton made a deal with HBO and the creator of Gotham, Bruno Heller, and started developing the script for Wayne. The rights of Heller's show were bought from FOX by HBO in order to use former scenes shown in Gotham as flashbacks and to create the "HBO's Gothamverse" that would later also include Pennyworth, a TV show where Holton is co-creator and executive producer only. Creator of the Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan, and his brother Jonathan are also involved in the project. This new TV series was intended as a standalone sequel to Heller's show being set 18 years after the show's finale and focusing on the life of the Bat-Family living in Gotham City. The show takes elements from the police-procedural genre and from various Batman stories, including videogames and movies while also including an original take on the characters by Holton and Christopher Nolan, the two lead writers.

Filming

[edit]

Principal photography for the pilot episode took place in New York City, and lasted until May 12, 2018. Filming for the rest of the first season began on May 14, 2018 in New York City and Chicago, Illinois, and was scheduled to last until August 16, 2018. The exterior shots and some interior shots of Wayne Manor were filmed at the Webb Institute's Stevenson Taylor Hall, as for Gotham, the Joel Schumacher's movies and the 2019 film, Joker.

HBO's Gothamverse

[edit]

HBO's Gothamverse (also known as Holton's Gothamverse) is an American superhero shared universe that is centered on various interconnected television series based on DC Comics superhero characters, airing on HBO. The series were developed by Bruno Heller and Nathan Holton. Set in a shared fictional multiverse much like the DC Universe and DC Multiverse in comic books, it was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters that span three live-action television series.

The franchise began with Gotham, based on the characters Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne, which debuted in September 2014. It was followed by Wayne in 2018, mainly based on the character Damian Wayne. The franchise was further expanded in 2019, when in July of that year a new series titled Pennyworth debuted, starring characters that originally appeared on both Gotham and Wayne, mainly Alfred Pennyworth. In addition to the live-action series, the franchise has spawned three television live-action specials, Gotham by Gaslight, Soul of the Dragon, and Charmed; released in 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively.

An animated spin-off series titled Wayne & Kent was announced in January 2024. Similar to the specials, the series doesn't share continuity with the main shows, instead telling an original story with teenagers, Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent, as main characters. Produced by Holton Studios and Legendary Animation, the series is set to premiere in 2025.
