Genesis (2009) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) promotion, which took place on January 11, 2009 at the Bojangles' Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was the fourth event under the Genesis chronology. Eight professional wrestling matches were featured on the event's card.
Production
[edit]Background
[edit]The fourth installment of the TNA Genesis PPV chronology was announced on the first day of 2008, when TNA updated their PPV schedule on their official website, with Genesis being listed for November 9, 2008.[2] However, in October 2008 TNA decided to change the date of their Turning Point PPV event from December 14 to the day of Genesis and hosting their fifth Final Resolution PPV event, even though they had produced one earlier that year in January, on the day Turning Point was originally planned. Genesis was then booked for sometimes in January 2009.[3] In mid-October 2008, wrestling news sites, such as WrestleView, ran a story claiming that TNA were considering hosting Genesis 2009 on the road outside of the TNA Impact! Zone in Orlando, Florida, where most of their PPV events are held.[4] The date for Genesis was released in late-October 2008 to be January 11, 2009.[5] In early November 2008, it was reported by a WrestleView that TNA was thinking of holding Genesis in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.[6] Following their Turning Point event on November 9, 2008, TNA issued a press release regarding Genesis 2009. In the statement, the event was scheduled to take place on January 11, 2009 at the Cricket Arena (later renamed the "Bojangles' Coliseum" before the event) in Charlotte, North Carolina.[7] Tickets for the event went on sale November 15, 2008.[7] In late-November early-December 2008, the official poster for Genesis was released with Mick Foley appearing on the cover.[8]

Storylines
[edit]Genesis featured eight professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines. Wrestlers were portrayed as either heels (villains) or faces (heroes) in the scripted events that built tension and culminated into a wrestling match or series of matches.

[edit]Preliminary matches
[edit]The opening match at the event was a Six Man Tag Team Elimination match. The match was announced the day of the event, as being an Eight Man Tag Team match, featuring Eric Young, Shark Boy, and The Latin American Xchange (Homicide and Hernandez) versus Kip James, Raven, Kiyoshi, and another partner to be announced.[9] Before the event, however, TNA changed the match to just Eric Young and The Latin American Xchange versus Jimmy Rave, Sonjay Dutt, and Kiyoshi. Mick Tenay announced before the contest began, that Rhino, who was to be battling for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship that night, had yet to arrive and that Jim Cornette was trying to get into contact with him. This was a storyline of course which lead to future events in the night. Dutt pinned Young to eliminate him after a legdrop; Dutt's feet were on the ropes during the pinfall to add extra leverage to the cover. Homicide was eliminated seconds after Young by Rave, with a roll-up pin. Hernandez then entered the ring as the last remaining member of his team. Hernandez went on to eliminate Dutt, Rave, and Kiyoshi. He first pinned Kiyoshi after performing the Border Toss by lifting Kiyoshi up onto his back, holding Kiyoshi like a crucifix, and throwing him across the ring. He eliminated Dutt afterwards, by catching Dutt in mid-air and falling to a seated position to complete a sit-down powerbomb. Rave was the last eliminated, after a splash from the top turnbuckle.[10]
