Frank Joseph Provost (born Florimondus-Josephus Provoost; 9 March 1879 - 17 March 1936), was a Belgian-American mucisian and politician who served as the 22nd mayor of Anaconda, Montana from 1933 until 1936, when he suffered a heart attack and unexpectedly died in office.
Early Life
[edit]Provost was born as Florimondus-Josephus Provoost in Gistel, Belgium to parents Ferdinandus-Josephus Provoost (1827-1913) and Rosalia Coleta Rommelaere (c. 1836-?). He was born at 11:00 PM at the family's home on Hospitaalstraat.[1]
He lived in Binghamton, New York after immigrating. He lived there for about a year before moving to Anaconda in 1906.
Entry to Politics
[edit]Mayorship
[edit]Provost won the 1933 mayoral election on the Democratic ticket. There was no contest with Harvey Moore, the mayor before him, as he was looking to retire from the job.
1935 Election[2]
Death
[edit]On the morning of 17 March 1936, Provost began feeling pain while in the restroom of his home at 214 Hickory Street. Once Christina, his wife, returned from morning services at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, he called her in. Sitting on the edge of his bathtub, he requested a glass of water. Christina came back shortly with the water, of which he took a sip. Directly after, he slumped from the tub onto the floor where he succumbed to a heart attack.[3]
Medical professionals were soon summoned, but he was declared dead upon their arrival.
After a waiting period of three days, city council convened for a special session on the 20th.[4] There they passed Resolution No. 487, declaring intent to elect a new mayor,[5] and Resolution No. 488,[6] an official statement on Provost's death. His council-elected successor, Thomas Joseph McCarvel, assumed office between resolutions. A letter of condolence from the Butte City Council was also received and read.[4]
