Nick Martin is a British journalist, currently working as People and Politics Correspondent for Sky News, the 24-hour television news service operated by Sky UK. He has occupied this position since June 2018 and reports on how political policy impacts on the people of Britain. [1]
Early life and education
[edit]Martin was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in the seaside town of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside in north east England..[citation needed]
Martin was educated at Monkseaton Community High School.
Life and career
[edit]After leaving school, Martin gained work experience at the Whitley Bay News Guardian, a local weekly newspaper. A few months later he became a Junior Reporter and was trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). In 1999, Martin was named Weekly Newspaper Journalist of the Year in the North East Press Awards [1] for his coverage of the murder of a Finnish-born student called Sara Cameron, whose body was found in a field in the village of Earsdon. Judges said his reporting showed a "sensitive and dogged determination to keep the story in the public domain." In 2000, Martin was named National Newcomer of the Year in the BT/Society of Editors Press Awards in July 2000.
In 2001, Martin joined ITV Border as a production journalist later becoming a reporter and presenter. In 2003, he was named Newcomer of the Year by the Royal Television Society. In 2004 he was awarded Best TV Journalism Award by the Royal Television Society for his work into child poverty in Cumbria.[2]
While on attachment to ITV News in London, Nick was the first reporter to be sent to the scene of the London Bombings on July 7 2005. He reported throughout the day from the Royal London Infirmary.
In June 2006, it was announced that Martin would join Channel 4 News as north of England Correspondent. [3] As well as reporting on events across UK Martin was sent to cover stories around the world, including central America. In December 2009, Martin's coverage of human traffiking in Mexico won him TV News Story of the Year at the Foreigh Press Association Awards. His report, which featured a young Mexican girl who had escaped from a drug cartel, prompted a US Federal Investigation by the Department of Homeland Security. [3]
Martin joined Sky News in February 2011 as News Correspondent.
Personal life
