The FIFA Club World Cup is a football competition between the champion clubs from all six continental confederations.

The first FIFA Club World Cup saw the winners of the 1999 CONCACF Champions Cup, the 1998 Copa Libertadores, the 1998-99 UEFA Champions League, the 1999 CAF Champions League, the 1998 Asian Super Cup, the 1999 Oceania Club Championship, the 1998 Intercontinental Cup and the 1999 Campeonato Brasileiro.

Before the FIFA Club World Championship

Before the FIFA Club World Championship, there was the Intercontinental Cup which between 1960 and 1992 was contested between the winners of the seasonal European Cup and the winners of the years Copa Libertadores and between 1993 and 2004 was contested between the winners of the seasonal UEFA Champions League and the winners of the years Copa Libertadores. Between 1960 and 1979, it was played over two matches home and away. The club who won both matches or won a match and drew a match won the Intercontinental Cup. If both clubs won a match or drew both matches, a playoff match would determine who would win the Intercontinental Cup.

Between 1980 and 2004, the winners of the seasonal European Cup and the years Copa Libertadores played a single match in Japan. If both clubs were tied, two fifteen minutes halfs of extra time would determine the winner. If both clubs were still tied after extra time, penalty shootouts would determine the winner. Between 1980 and 2001, the Intercontinental Cup was held at the National Stadium in Tokyo and between 2002 and 2004, the Intercontinental Cup was held at the International Stadium in Yokohama.

FIFA Club World Championship format

It began in 2000 between January 5 to 14 and was known as the FIFA Club World Championship. It was held in Brazil. It saw two groups of four clubs. The clubs played three games each. A win earned a club three points while a draw earned a club one point while a loss earned a club zero points. After three matches, the clubs who topped their groups met in the final while the clubs who came second in the groups faced off against each other in a third place playoff while clubs who finished third and fourth in the groups were eliminated.

The second FIFA Club World Championship would have took place in Spain in the summer of 2001 between July 28 to August 12. It would have saw three groups of four clubs (an increase by one group). The clubs would have played three games each. A win would have earned a club three points while a draw would have earned a club one point while a loss would have earned a club zero points. After three matches, the clubs who topped their groups and the best placed second place club from any group would have moved on to the semi finals while the two worst placed second place clubs from any group and the clubs who finished third and fourth in the groups who have been eliminated. In the semi finals, The club who topped group A would have met the club who topped group B while the club who topped group C would have met the best placed second place club from any group. The winners would have met in the final while the losers would have met in a third place play off.

Old FIFA Club World Cup format

The FIFA Club World Cup was revived in 2005 to replace the Intercontinental Cup (which had the winners of the UEFA Champions League face off against the winners of the Copa Libertadores). In the first two FIFA Club World Cups, the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions League started in the semi finals while the winners of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, the CAF Champions League, the AFC Champions League and the Oceania Club Championship started in the quarter finals. There was two quarter finals with the winners moving on to the semi finals with the losers facing off in a fifth place playoff. The winners of the semi finals met in the final while the losers met in the third place playoff. From the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup, the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions league started in the semi finals while the winners of the CONCACAF Champions League, the CAF Champions League and the AFC Champions League started in the quarter finals and the winners of the OFC Champions League and the winners of the host nations domestic league started in the preliminary round. If a club from the country hosting the FIFA Club World Cup won their continental title, the runner up from another country who lost to them in the final took their place in the preliminary round and the club from the country hosting the FIFA Club World Cup who won their continental title started in the quarter finals. This happened in the 2007 and 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and has not happened since then. In the preliminary round, the winner moved on to the quarter finals while the loser was eliminated. There was still two quarter finals where the winners moved on to the semi finals while the losers were eliminated. In the semi finals, the winners advanced to the final while the losers face off in a third place playoff. From the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup, in the preliminary round, the winner moved on to the quarter finals while the loser was eliminated. There was still two quarter finals where the winners moved on to the semi finals while the losers faced off in a fifth place playoff. In the semi finals, the winners advanced to the final while the losers faced off in a third place playoff. Throughout the FIFA Club World Cup, it was held in December.

New FIFA Club World Cup format

The FIFA Club World Cup will now have the winners of the CONCACAF Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, the UEFA Champions League, the CAF Champions League, the AFC Champions League and the OFC Champions League facing off against each other in a single group. Each club will play five matches. A win will earn a club three points, a draw will earn a club one point and a loss will earn a club zero points. The club who tops the group after five matches will win the FIFA Club World Cup. If two clubs jointly top the group after five matches, then the head to head record will determine who will win the FIFA Club World Cup. If the two clubs who drew, jointly top the group after five matches, then goal difference will determine who will win the FIFA Club World Cup.

Hosts

The FIFA Club World Cup was held in Japan from 2005 to 2008 with the next two editions being held in the United Arab Emirates and the next two editions returning to Japan. Morocco will host the FIFA Club World Cup in 2013 and 2014. After that, it will be held in any stadium, in any city, in any country.
