Pranjul Bhandari is an Indian Economist. She is the chief India economist for HSBC Securities. She holds the responsibility of developing the firm’s position on public policy and macroeconomic in India. She leads the economics research franchise from Mumbai.
Education

Career
[edit]Prior to graduating from the Harvard Kennedy School, in 2005, she got her first job with the British Government as the assistant economist at the Department for International Development where she was appointed to deal with funding.[1]
She landed her second job at Goldman Sachs based out of Hong Kong when the 2008 financial crisis hit.[1]
In 2010 while working for the Planning commission with its deputy chief Montek Sing Ahluwalia. In 2012, she joined the ministry of Finance to work for Raghuram Rajan, the then economic advisor to the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
After graduating from Harvard, she completed a resident fellowship at the IMF in Washington.[2]
In 2014, she was appointed as the chief India economist for HSBC where she looks over macroeconomics and public policy .[3][2]
Research
[edit]While at HSBC, her notable research include one on the consumption demand over the next decade in India where the consumption demand could increase with a combination of higher wages and increased convenience of online shopping. It shows that 20 millions gross jobs could be created in IT and management (30%), customer care and logistics and delivery (70%).[1]
In another study, Bhandari found out that there is a correlation between water reservoir levels and agricultural production and food inflation and not monsoon rains. Since previously it was believed that agricultural produce was determined by monsoon levels.[1]
In her work along with Raghuram Rajan she evaluated how public policy affects Small and medium-sized enterprises in India.[1]
