The Great Battle of the Pyramids was a major engagement fought on 22July 1198, during the French Invasion of Egypt . The battle took place near the Great Pyramid of Giza

Background

[edit]

After Philip II arrived in Egypt and invaded the city of Ajami, he decided to end the war quickly and advanced quickly to Cairo. On the way, he did not want to clash with the Ayyubids, so he decided to take a risk and entered the Giza Desert with his army, but the Arabs of the desert alerted the Ayyubids. The Ayyubids gathered their forces and brought the Mamluks, Negroes and Arabs. The peasants joined them on the way and they stood on the edge of Cairo waiting for signs of the arrival of the Crusader. When they arrived, they quickly advanced towards the pyramids in order to engage them there.

The battle

[edit]

When the Crusaders saw the Ayyubid crowds advancing towards the pyramids, they quickly ran to seize the gaps between the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Muslims linked the pyramids, but the French attacked them forcefully and tried to break the link. They actually captured the smaller pyramid and expelled the Arab garrison from it and climbed it. The battle was intense with strong clashes. One of the advantages that the Ayyubid forces possessed was the catapult, but its owners had to be careful when launching it so as not to cause damage to the pyramids. They were also distinguished by their martyrdom battalions that entered forcefully and harshly on the French forces and their remnants, which were the ones who captured the area between the pyramids, which led to a significant weakening of the French. In addition to the smart strategy they used, the catapult throwers, the French were never able to withdraw, and 15,000 of their soldiers were killed and 5,000 were captured, but the Muslims were not better, as they lost 10,000 men.

Aftermath

[edit]

The French fled to the city of Shubrament, then advanced towards Maadi Island, where they seized many ships there. They wanted to seek refuge in the city of Tora, where the Copts welcomed them, but they happened to find fossid military ships there, and a battle took place that ended with the defeat of the French and their separation. Philip left his soldiers to fend for themselves in the desert, while he himself went to the city of Helwan, disguised as a Muslim man He used to visit the Companions Mosque daily. After that, he was contacted by a network of churches in Egypt, which decided to smuggle him to Alexandria to support the siege there, The smuggling journey began at 2:00 AM when a Bedouin came to him and walked with him through complex desert roads until they arrived near the city of Hawamdiya He hid in the monastery of Saint Anba the Great and stayed there all day. Then at night he entered a tunnel and walked in it until he left the city and headed to Maadi where he hid in the Church of the Holy Family. Then on the same day he headed to Giza and hid in a group of churches, specifically the Church of Saint George. But after hearing rumors that King Philip was hiding in the churches, the Egyptians tightened the guard and began searching the churches daily. Philip used to walk in the tunnels daily between the churches. The issue of smuggling in churches was no longer on the table, so he hid in a shipment of vegetables heading to help besieged Alexandria. When he arrived, the happy news was that Alexandria had fallen into the hands of the French.
