These lists represent what I think are the most quintessential, representative pieces of music, of various genres.
List of quintessential concertos
[edit]- Piano: Ludwig van Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Opus 58
- Guitar: Joaquín Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez
- Orchestra: Béla Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra; you don't even have to think about this one. Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Orchestra may be fun for musicians, but it's boring for the listeners. Jay Greenberg's Symphony No. 5 is, to an extent, modelled on Bartók's Concerto, but it's definitely a symphony.
- Flute: Antonio Vivaldi, Flute Concerto "Il Gardelino" RV 428
- Oboe: Vincenzo Bellini, Oboe Concerto in E-flat major
- Clarinet: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
- Bassoon: Mozart, Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, K. 191
- Horn: Mozart, Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat major, K. 495. He wrote four of them, all good, and three are in the same key. It's a tough choice.
- Trumpet: Joseph Haydn, Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, Hob. VII e 1; it might not have been the first for the fully chromatic trumpet, but it's the first in our hearts as far as trumpet concertos are concerned.
- Trombone: Michael Haydn, Trombone Concerto in D major
- Tuba:
- Timpani: Georg Druschetzky, Timpani Concerto. This is the only timpani concerto I have ever heard.
- Violin: Johannes Brahms, Violin Concerto in D major. Tchaikovsky's is a close second. A tough call, but my call to make.
- Viola: Sally Beamish, Viola Concerto (1995)
- Cello: Antonín Dvořák, Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104, Burghauser 191. This is the cello concerto Brahms wished he could have written.
- Double bass: Serge Koussevitsky, Double Bass Concerto, Opus 3
