The 36th Mississippi Infantry Regiment (also known as the "Thirty-Sixth Mississippi") was an infantry formation of the Confederate States Army in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, and was successively commanded by Colonels Drury J. Brown, then William W. Witherspoon.[1]

History

[edit]

The Thirty-sixth was organized in May 1862. It was composed of volunteer companies organized under a call of the Governor to assemble at Meridian, where the companies were mustered into the Confederate service. Field officers were elected March 12, 1862. The regiment was in camp at Meridian during the battle of Shiloh.[1] It soon was involved in the siege of Corinth and later taken prisoner after the siege of Vicksburg. Paroled, it then fought in the Atlanta Campaign and the Battle of Franklin and Nashville. It ended the war in the defense of Mobile.[2]
