Grammar, style, worth remembering
[edit]From User:Grant65
[edit]- Misuse of dashes and hyphens, i.e.:
- emdash ( — ) only ever used as parentheses, either with or without spaces, according to style and preference, i.e.: Sdgdf sdasfasag — bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf — fgagfga fasdfasdf or; Sdgdf sdasfasag—bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf—fgagfga fasdfasdf.
- endash ( – ) used in ranges, such as "10–20" years. Now sometimes used as parentheses, usually with spaces, i.e. Sdgdf sdasfasag – bvbnnbsngn jfdgjdj hfhsf agdfgf – fgagfga fasdfasdf.
- hyphen ( - ), which should only ever be used both to join two words, without spaces, e.g. Hobson-Jobson. (See also en dash versus em dash.)

Help with wikidata item
[edit]I was trying to link the various pages of pepper (Capsicum) from rowiki with their counterparts in enwiki. But I messed up the Capsicum annuum interlanguage links instead (I think I assigned it a new Qid by mistake and I don't know how to undo that). Can somebody help me undo my mess? Please and thanks! ♦ WikiUser70176 ♦(My talk page) 15:59, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- P.S. the old and correct QID for Capsicum annuum was Q1380. How do I "give it back"? ♦ WikiUser70176 ♦(My talk page) 16:12, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- WikiUser70176 I have restored the previous situation for the en articles
- Capsicum annuum Q1380
- Chili Q344355
- I am not sure what the ro articles should link to, currently they are
- ro:Capsicum annuum Q125646208
- ro:Ardei iute Q1380
- TSventon (talk) 16:49, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! I panicked because I screwed up the enwiki. ro:Capsicum annuum should be Q1380, just as en:Capsicum annuum. The problem appeared when 2 rowiki pages ro:Chili and ro:Ardei iute have two different Qs but they refer to the same thing. Because ro:Chili redirects to ro:Ardei iute, I wanted to assign Q344355 to ro:Ardei iute. Long story short, I effed up enwiki by mistake. Thanks again for correcting it. BTW, how did you do it, maybe I learn something. ♦ WikiUser70176 ♦(My talk page) 17:31, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- WikiUser70176 thank you for seeking help when something went wrong. You can see what I did in today's entries at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/TSventon , each edit has a difference. I think I learned the basics of Wikidatas through trial and error, so I didn't start with a manual. The first few steps were
- I opened the wikidata items Q1380 and Q344355
- I clicked edit on the lists of Wikipedia links at the bottom of the page
- I copied Chili from enwiki at Q1380
- I clicked the remove icon for enwiki at Q1380 and then publish
- I entered en and pasted Chili at the bottom of Q344355 and then clicked publish
- I would also have moved the description from the In more languages section at the top, but that was already correct.
- Finally I was left with duplicate items Q1380 and Q125646208 so I merged them using the merge gadget, see d:Help:Merge. I hope that all makes sense. TSventon (talk) 18:42, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
