Disorganized Essay Example
[edit]I've always been interested in music, and learning about different musical instruments, when I was a kid I played clarinet in the school band, although other kinds of instruments have also interested me. I eventually found out that instruments are grouped in families, like the string family, the reed family and the percussion family.
One example of the string family is the violin, which is an instruments that have strings that are bowed or plucked. There have been many famous violin players throughout history, and the violin has spread all around the world, appearing in many different types of music. In addition to the violin, the string section has the bass, the cello, the guitar and the viola.
Clarinet is a reed instrument, which is an instrument that has a reed you blow through to make the sound. Instead of a string vibrating, the reed vibrates. The clarinet has been around for a long time with surviving examples from as early as the 1760s, while another reed instrument, the saxophone has been around since the 1840s.
There is also the percussion family, where you hit the instrument with a mallet or stick to create a sound, similar to how one hits a drum. While you'd think it was a string instrument, the piano is actually a percussion instrument, because the notes are created when a small hammer hits the string which produces the sound. Instruments like xylophones, marimbas, and timpani are also examples of percussion instruments. One of the weirdest instruments I know of is called the "glass harmonica." It was invented by Benjamin Franklin, after he heard Edmund Delaval run his fingers over water glasses filled to varying amounts, creating a song. The instrument fits under the unconventional section of percussion.
In addition to the three orchestral families covered above, there is also the brass family which covers instruments such as the trumpet and the tuba. When all instruments are played together harmoniously, it creates a full and rich sound for the audience.
