Huang Jiguang (Chinese: 黄继光; pinyin: Huang Jiguang) (January 18, 1931– October 19, 1952)was born in a small village which named Huang Jiguang of Zhongjiang county, Sichuan province, china. He joined the People's Liberation Army on march in 1951 and was appointed as a correspondent in the company 9 , group 135, division 45 of Chinese Volunteer Army took part in the Korea war. At the battle of Triangle Hill (or Shangganling as called in Chinese) in October 1952, the highland 597.8 which was crucial to the victory of the battle was conquered by the enemy, in order to reconquer the highland 597.8, Huang Jiguang sacrificed himself by blocking the enemy’s fire hole with his chest, As a result, his troop reconquered the highland 597.8 successfully.
Personal experience
[edit]He grew up in a village now called Ji Guang village , and resided there in his youth until he joined the Chinese People's Volunteers Army to fight against the Americans in Korea in 1951. He attended primary school and then dropped out of school because his mother couldn't support his studies. He begun to take attention to the protection of rights of the people when he was a child, and attended the farmer association in his village to fight against with the landowners. Later he attended the Chinese people’s volunteers army to fight against the United States in Korea in 1951 .
Family life
[edit]He was born in a poor peasant family which was oppressed by landowner for several generations in 1931. And his father died as a result of the extreme burden and oppression from the landowners when he was just 6 years old. He had a little brother ,and his mother brought them up lonely. But the landowner still had a variety of oppression and exploitation to their family after his father’s death. So, Huang Jiguang hope for a day that people will have their own right. He had no Spouse and progeny because he was just 21 years old and didn’t get married when he sacrificed his life.
Sacrifice
[edit]October 14th , 1952 ,Shang Gan Ling battle broke out. The Highland 597.9 of Shang Gan Ling was very crucial to the victory of the battle, but it was occupied by the enemy at that time. At the night of October 19th, Huang Jiguang ‘s troop was ordered to counterattack the enemy who occupied the highland 597.9. In the process of counterattack, his troop suffered crazy shoot by enemy’s hidden firepower, and many of his comrade-in-army died. At that time of crisis, Huang Jiguang took part in the pioneer unit ,in the battle ,two of his comrade-in-army died, and Huang Jiguang himself swooned after shot by 4 continuous bullets. After a while ,he was woken up by the sound of machine gun of enemy, and then he climbed to the fire hole of enemy blockhouse and blocked the fire hole with his chest. As a result, The machine-gun was silenced and his troop conquered the Highland 597.9, Huang died. His sacrifice directly lead to the victory of Shang Gan Ling battle.

[edit]After the battle, he was posthumously admitted to the membership of the Communist Party of China, was awarded a special-class merit and was conferred with the title of "Special-Class Hero". The Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea posthumously granted him with the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea", a Gold-Star Medal and a First-Class Medal of National Flag.
Impact of his heroism
[edit]As a result of his heroism, the People's Volunteers Army soldiers overran the position and annihilated two battalions of the enemy. his spirit encouraged all of the soldiers , even all the people of china at that time. And all of the people including students, workers, intellects and soldiers also encouraged by his spirit and would like to sacrifice their life to protect their country and develop their country at that time. Even now, this spirit remain in people’s speacially the soldiers’ heart and have an great impact on their work and life.
Memorial
[edit]The Huang Jiguang Memorial was built in the Confucian Temple of Zhongjiang County in Sichuang province, his hometown in 1962. In 1989, a new museum was built covering a total space of 16,000 square meters with a floor space of 2,000 square meters. In the memorial scenic area are the China-Korea Friendship Pavilion and the white marble sculpture of the hero sacrificing himself in the battle. The memorial consists of 5 exhibition halls with 200 exhibits, telling about Huang Jiguan's life story with the emphasis on the deed of sacrificing himself in the Shangganling Battle during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
