Warren Espinosa
[edit]Warren Espinosa is basketball coach from Costa Rica who acquired notoriety for been the Women´s Head Coach from the Chilean Basketball Federation (2017-2022) winning back to back Women´s South America Championship, with the U-14 and U15 National Teams in 2017 and 2018, and lead the Team Huasitas to qualify to the FIBA U17 Women´s Basketball World Cup.
High School
[edit]Espinosa attended Liceo de Costa Rica, in San Jose, Costa Rica.
College
[edit]Espinosa completed his studies at Universidad Centroamericana de Ciencia Sociales (UCACIS), earning a Bachelor in Psychology; and went on to complete a degree at Leipzig University, in Human Movement Sciences. Espinosa also completed a degree at Centro de Alto Rendimiento (CAR) Barcelona, in Sciences Applied to High Performance Sports.
Coaching
[edit]Espinosa began coaching middle school and high school teams before finishing college. His first head coaching position was at Saint Clare School, spending two seasons and reaching the MEP Middle School Championship Game in 1996. In 1997, Espinosa accepted a position as Head Coach at Saint Francis College, spending two seasons before leaving to Germany in order to complete his studies.
At his return to Costa Rica in 2000, Espinosa accepted an offer from Lincoln School, as Head Coach to the Men´s Basketball Program, spending six seasons, helping them to reach the MEP National Tournament two times in 2000 and 2001.
In 2006, Espinosa had his first participation as Head Coach for Costa Rica Women´s National Team attending the 2006 Centrobasket Women, in Mexico; finishing in the seventh position.
After losing to Guatemala in the Championship Game at the FIBA COCABA Championship, in 2007; Espinosa left Costa Rica in order to become an Assistant Coach for the men's basketball team at Deportes Castro, in Chile; making the transition to International Basketball in 2008.
In 2011-2012 Deportes Castro offered Espinosa the position as Head Coach to go back to the professional Liga Movistar, in Chile; winning the National Championship against Boston College in the Finals. Espinosa won Liga Movistar Coach of the Year honors after winning the Championship for the first time in Deportes Castro history.
The Costa Rican Basketball Federation persuaded him to accept the head coaching position as Women´s National Team and Espinosa made the move, helping Costa Rica to win the Gold Medal at the X Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos.
After this last tenure as Costa Rica National Team, Espinosa joined the Men´s Ferreteria Brenes Barva team as Head Coach, in the Costa Rican Professional League for one season, winning the National Championship in 2013, defeating ARBA San Ramon in the Finals.
In 2015, Espinosa was hired as Women´s Head Coach for PROBALPA Palmares Basketball Program where he spent two seasons, qualifying Palmares to the ICODER National Tournament in 2016.
In August 2017, the Chilean Basketball Federation announced Espinosa as Head Coach for the Women´s National Teams.
Espinosa quickly restored Chile performance, leading his U14 National Team to win the South American Tournament, in Popayan, Colombia; defeating Brazil in the Final, for the first time since 1965. The following year, Espinosa's U15 National Team made it back to the South American Tournament Championship game, defeating Ecuador and crowning Chile as Back to Back Champions for the first time since 1962.
In 2019, Chile qualify to the FIBA U17 Women´s World Cup, placing third place at the FIBA Americas U16 Tournament, losing only to USA and Canada.
After the COVID-19 pandemic prematurely cancelled the FIBA U17 Women´s World Cup to be held in Romania 2020, Espinosa remained three more seasons in Chile, leading the Senior National Team to the Championship Game at the Bolivarian Games, in Valledupar, Colombia; losing the Finals to Colombia National Team.
