Box House Apparel (sometimes styled Boxhouse Apparel or BOXHOUSE Apparel) is an Ottawa-based apparel and design company founded in 2010 by Canadian clothing designer Leigh Bequette. [1] The company is known for custom tailored streetwear and Bequette's use of unique texture combinations, as espoused by one of their creeds: "the material is the message."[2]
Despite Box House Apparel's short history, Bequette has quickly been risen to become recognized as one of Ottawa's most prominent fashion designers despite having never took part in the official Ottawa Fashion Week. In February 2010, he was nominated as Ottawa's Favourite Fashion Designer in the Faces Magazine Service Industry Gala Awards.[3]
Bequette attended Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design in Ottawa for one year. While still in high school, Bequette was present for a presentation from the Academy. About his encounter with representatives from the school, Bequette said: "They came to my school and did a presentation [...] I thought it would be cool to make my own clothing. They thought my work was unique, but I had no idea how to sew, so I had to take sewing courses." And according to an article in The Fulcrum Newspaper, Bequette was forced to take 30 hours of sewing courses before the Academy would even consider him."[4]
In 2009, Bequette set up his own studio in Ottawa, Ontario.[5] In the fall 2010, he officially launched Box House Apparel at the age of 22 with a fashion show at Babylon Nightclub.[6]
