Hodshon Huis is a rijksmonumentaal hôtel particulier in the centre of the Dutch city Haarlem. Its build started in 1794 by commision of Cornelia Catharina Hodshon. It was designed by Abraham van der Hart. Since 2008 it has been owned byVereniging Hendrick de Keyser. Which renovated the property in 2010.
History
[edit]In 1841 the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) become the owner of the property. They expanded it to include an auditorium in 1903. To do this the garden had to be removed. The interior was renovated from 1995 to 2001, while the shell and auditorium were renovated between 2008 and 2010.
Exterior
[edit]An oriel window has been placed on the front facade, which spans the full height of the building. A natural stone plinth spans the full width of the building. The piano nobile and the storey contain seven bays. Above the storey is a wooden balustrade with sculptures in the centre, above the oriel window.
The back of the building, between the wings, there is a wall with crenellated and wrought iron gaiting. This has been build in the neogotic style, as opposed to the building itself. A gable stone was placed on the left wing bordering the courtyard, on it the year 1794 is inscribed.
Interior
[edit]The ground floor used to be where the staff quarters were located. On the southside of the building the service entrance is still present. As well as the stairwell for the servants. This stairwell provided access to the cellars, kitchen and scullery.
De storey contains the living and sleeping quarters. The sleeping quarters of Cornelia Catharina Hodshon, guestrooms, and the lady's maid quarters were located on this here. While the servants stayed in the attic. A cabinet and four decorated State Apartments have been preserved from the original decor. The State Apartments are: the dining room, conference room, playroom and music room. The conference room, also called Etrurische salon, is decorated by detailed painting based on the Greek red-figure pottery. The playroom, or red hall, is decorated by woodcarving on the wall and ceiling. In 1900 it was converted to a library by the Koninklijke Hollandse Maatschappij der Wetenschappen. The former music room, or blue room, is decorated with plaster in Wedgwood-style. It is based on the 1790 prints of Michelangelo Pergolesi. All of the previous rooms contain a marble chimney.[1]
The auditorium was build in 1903 by the KHMW. It has a neogotic beamed ceiling and wall painting.
