On JULY 2, 1964 Moise Tshombe announced he has won the backing of a “common front” formed from fragments of the late Premier Patrice Lumumba’s extreme nationalist party. A communique signed jointly by Tshombe, former secessionist president of Katanga, and a Lumumbist leader, [2]http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/51138725/, said the two had agreed to collaborate to “bring about a sincere reconciliation of all the Congo’s sons.” Many felt the accord would make it virtually certain that the Katangan would be able to form a government. Lumumba was slain in Katanga in 1961 and some Africans have blamed Tshombe. Tshombe was entrusted by President Joseph Kasavubu with consulting politicians on the possibility of forming a government after Prime Minister [3] resigned Tuesday. Before Tshombe can attempt to form a cabinet, however, he must be named premier- designated by Kasavubu. Tshombe and Kiwewa agreed to worlc for the release of an imprisoned leftwinger, Antoine Gizenga, and the return of all exiles. They also agreed to conduct a pacification campaign to halt [4], Kivu and North Katanga provinces. http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/51138725/
