I am an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the College of Engineering at Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho. My current research project is in the field of databases, where I came up with a new kind of database that represents relationships amongst entities exclusively by means of pointers as opposed to tables. I call this type of database system ILE, which stands for "Intentionally-Linked Entities." This sounds similar to the now-mostly-defunct Network Databases, but actually it differs from Network Databases in some very significant aspects. Unlike Network and other object-oriented databases, ILE is a value-oriented database system, permitting easy "find every" type search on keys. Also, while using ILE requires the knowledge of the relationships in the database, it does not require detailed knowledge of the linkages among records like Network databases do. Perhaps the most important advantage of ILE is that it permits natural modeling of relationships of arities higher than 2 (non-binary relationships), including relationships where each role may be served by more (or fewer) than one entity. This makes ILE suitable for representing complex systems such as social networks, temporal and historical GIS, and any other system with complex linkages amongst the entities.
