History
[edit]Although documented as early as 1019, only its chevet remains of the original Romanesque structure. The belfry was left unfinished and the top was not built until the early twentieth century. The apse with its two radiating chapels was built in 1309, while most of the nave was built in the fourteenth century. The lateral chapels were a later addition, with the last two being built in 1702.
Inside the church, with its pointed arches and vaults, displays a certain unity of style. The nave and lateral chapels are Gothic, while the western facade, with its portal and the bell tower, are late Baroque of Rococo influence, flourished by a stone image of the pattern, with an elaborate ornamentation based on geometric reliefs, around the home, rosette and an oval porthole (with date of 1785). The keystones of the chancel stands tall, inscribed with the phrase Agnus Dei and adorned with two figureheads, presumingly depicting donors or benefactors.
To the floor are seventeenth and eighteenth century tombstones with the family shields of the local lineages Portós, Fàbrega, Estanyol, and Mas. Outside, embedded the south wall, is the thirteenth or fourteenth century tombstone of the knight Arnau de Pontós, with the crest of his lineal branch with its roots in Monells. Preserved at the Museum of Girona is a fourteenth century lipsanotheca placed in an altar, found in 1962 during the restoration of the church.
