Initial Survey

[edit]

Important Note: This survey is intended to be taken without any use of onwiki links or guidelines/policies. Only use your current knowledge. I want to see how much you know; I'm not testing you. Please answer honestly and to the best of your ability so I can best accustom the rest of the CVUA course to your strengths.

  • How confident do you feel about anti-vandalism?
    • A: Reasonably Confident
  • What is a good faith edit?
    • A: One which had good intentions even if it was a little suspect
  • What is vandalism?
    • A: When a page has had unencyclopaedic content added to it
  • How could one distinguish between good faith and vandalism?
    • A: At least with good faith, you know that the edit makes sense and it doesn’t consist of gibberish
  • When should you revert an edit?
    • A: In the event that its co tents are blatantly wrong or very unencyclopaedic
      • I tend to revert an edit whenever I believe the article was better without that edit having been made. Vermont (talk)
  • What is sockpuppetry?
    • A: That occasion in which a user operates additional accounts in order to evade a block or other sanctions placed against them, or perhaps wants to impersonate another user
      • Sockpuppetry is abusing multiple accounts regardless of why. It could be to vote multiple times on an AfD, promote a subject, or any other reason as prohibited by WP:SOCKING. Vermont (talk)
  • What should you do if you encounter a sockpuppet?
  • If you notice an account is vandalizing on multiple wikis, what do you do?
    • A: Report to admins and other high ranking editors
      • If it's vandalizing on multiple wikis, (example: an account vandalizing on the English Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, and English Wiktionary) report to m:SRG. Vermont (talk)
  • What is the difference between how you should treat edits from an IP editor and from a registered user?
    • A: An IP editor is likely less experienced and may receive additional warnings, also since IPs can be used by many people, I would suggest that people who use that IP for good edits make their own accounts, to avoid Surfer reign an underserved block, also account creation may be banned if the IP is extra evil
      • The main difference between IP's and accounts is AGF (Assume good faith) and warning. For IP's, as it's possible every edit is a different user, you must AGF and act as though it's their first instance of vandalism every few days (ex: if they reached a level 3 warning a month ago, restart at level 1). If it's an account, it can be assumed it's the same person. (ex: they uploaded a copyright violation a month ago, and they did it again, you can warn or report taking into consideration past actions). Vermont (talk)
  • What is ORES?
    • A: I don’t know
  • If you see a threat of harm, what do you do?
    • A: Remove it and warm the offending user
  • If you see a copyright violation, what do you do?
    • A: Since I don’t believe in copyright, I will do nothing here
      • Copyright is a thing, and Wikimedia sites are bound by law to follow it. If you don't support copyright, you have every right to add all your content in the public domain, but copyright violations found should be removed and revision deleted. Vermont (talk)
  • If you see personal details or doxxing, what do you do?
  • If you see personal attacks on a BLP, what do you do?
    • A: Remove content and report to admins
      • Remember to warn the user as well; for bad issues like personal attacks on a BLP you can start at a only/final (4im) warning. Vermont (talk)
  • If you see grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive content, what do you do?
    • A: Remove immediately and report to admins
  • What is metawiki?
  • What is mediawiki?
    • A: The same thing as Wikimedia?
  • What is the Wikimedia Commons?
    • A: That wiki, which contains many images, sound bites and other types of media
  • What copyright is text on Wikipedia licensed under?
  • What can rollbackers do?
    • A: They can revert loads of edits at once, this is a power I want really badly!
      • It's very useful for anti-vandalism, and allows people to use Huggle and other semi-automated tools. Vermont (talk)
  • What are a few of the more important things admins can do?
    • A: They dan block and ban users and they can also grant and revoke permissions and admin status
      • Admins cannot grant/revoke admin status, and they cannot ban users. Granting of administrator permissions are done via WP:RfA and bans are usually done through community consensus on WP:ANI or elsewhere. Vermont (talk)
  • What is a steward, and what do they do?
    • A: I hear they are higher ranking than admins and work across many wikis
      • See meta:Stewards. They're essentially the most highly-trusted Wikimedia volunteers, and it's very useful to know who they are and what they do. Vermont (talk)
  • If you have questions about anything, where can you go for help?
    • A: The help desk of course, and perhaps also the Teahouse!?
      • Yep! And, since I'm here to help you, my talk page.
  • Is this survey too long?
    • A: Probably

I have good answers?

Also, as I said I really want rollback rights, but have been refused multiple times by admins, please help me gain those rights, I really need them. Pablothepenguin (talk) 22:47, 5 November 2018 (UTC)/Pablothepenguin (talk) 22:47, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Once you've reviewed my responses, I'll add in your first task to get started with CVUA training. Just wondering, do you use IRC? If not, I could help you get it setup; it's a very useful resource to gain help from experienced users. Vermont (talk) 00:27, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
I don’t use IRC very often, last time I used it, I ended up annoying people on it and I have never been ack since.
Also, can I ask you why I’m having so much difficulty obtaining Rollback Rights? I have made at least a couple of requests and have been turned down on every occasion? What can I do to get Rollback Rights? Pablothepenguin (talk) 00:39, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Please read WP:RBK about rollback. Also, see WP:Hat collecting, which is what some may see your want for rollback to be. It's good to be eager to revert vandalism, although it's best to focus on helping the wiki rather than acquiring permissions. I'll paste your next task below.
