Kalyan Varma is a wildlife photographer [1][2] and filmmaker based out of Bangalore, India. He freelances with many of the world's leading magazines, environmental NGOs,[3] and television channels like National Geographic[4] and BBC.[5][6]
Career
[edit]In 2015, Kalyan, along with other photographers and journalists, founded the Peepli Project, a slow-journalism site which tries to showcase the issues of water, environment and development in India. It delves deep into the unreported, under-reported, themes that public discourse currently abdicates. It aims to bring together the right platform with the right journalist to tell the stories that matter most to a country on the cusp of dramatic, occasionally violent, often wrenching, change. Each project is reported from the ground, and is characterised by a mix of live reportage and deep narrative, the whole enriched with images and video, maps and timelines, and the entire suite of tools and technologies that enhance contemporary storytelling. [7] [8]
His recent project Nature without Borders showcases the relationship between people and wildlife in India in particularly the rise and factors that influenced the capture of elephants in Hassan. His video of the elephant capture went viral and was instrumental in the government banning large scale translocations of elephants in Karnataka[9]
