Cyber Society of India (CySI) was formed on 6th July 2004 by 8 professionals drawn from various sectors with a purpose of building a peaceful , ethical and prosperous Cyber netizen Society. This is a registered Society under the Registrar of Societies, Chennai (South).

Cyber Society of India (CySI) was formed in July 2004, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, as a registered Society coming under the Tamil Nadu Societies Act, 1975 and has been functioning as a non-profit organisation ever since. It is a well administered society conforming to the rules and regulations of the Societies Act managed by a team of dedicated cyber security professionals. In its formative years, its patrons included Dr R.K. Raghavan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._K._Raghavan)former Director Central Bureau of Investigation, India, the late Dr.N. Seshagiri, former Direcor General National Informatics Centre and Shri N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance Commissioner. (Wikipedia.org/wiki/N._Vittal#cite_note-1,). Dr R.K. Raghavan is a senior Indian Police Service official in India, having held numerous critical positions in police and investigating agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation and is credited to be instrumental in setting up the cyber crime cell for investigation in the CBI. Shri N. Vittal born 31 January 1938, belonging to the Indian Administrative Service 1960 batch, is one of the eminent public servants of India, who has held important positions in the Government of India, most prominent of which was that of the Central Vigilance Commissioner. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's 3rd highest civilian award, in 2012.

Founder Members: The founder members of CySI included R. Ramamurthy popularly known as Gemini Ramamurthy book on cyber laws in India, K. Srinivasan (prpoint.com), the noted communication expert credted with pioneering work in PR as a profession and editor of the one of the earliest e-magazines in India, and T. Theethan then Accountant General of India, Tamil Nadu Circle who later held many prestigious posts in the Government of India including that of Member Railway Board Audit in the Ministry of Railways, Govt of India. Besides, other prominent members included software security professional, service minded tech-savvy individuals with the only binding factor driving all members together being the urge to give back to the society the inputs and knowledge acquied by them over the years on cyber security, vulnerabilities in an electronic transaction, cyber laws etc.

Objectives: The main objective of the Society is to spread awareness on the use of computers and electornic communications, to serve as an information medium for the general public cautioning them on the vulnerabilities in an e-transaction, the risks associated in the cyber space and a general idea on cyber laws and its usage to protect the common netizens from vicitimization in cyber crimes. The Vision of CySI is to contribute to the building of peaceful , ethical and prosperous Cyber netizen Society and its mission is to provide a forum for debate, training, place of assistance and research, which actively promote good Cyber netizen Society and advise the concerned bodies on related matter.

CySI has been following this obejctive very assiduously over the years by conducting seminars and conferences in various places from software firms, colleges and Universities, training colleges of banks and other institutions including the training academies of investigating agencies like the CBI.  The principal office bearers of CySI have addressed the IT related and cyber security training programs conducted at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, the Pondicherry Police Training Academy besides the zonal training institutions of police force in Coimbatore, Northern Zone etc.

History: Ever since its establishment with a modest founder members numbering nine, CySI has now grown into an all India organisation with membership in different parts of India including New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru etc. Besides the main events which are organised in and around Chennai, CySI also arranges workshops and seminars on Information Security in other places like Bengaluru, New Delhi, Coimbatore etc too, depending upon the requests from the particular areas.

CySI celerbated its tenth year in a grand manner in Chennai, in April 2014, in which His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr K Rosaiah, was the Chief Guest. On the occasion, the patrons, founder members and principal sponsors were honoured in recognition of their commitment, service and dedication in the cause of spreading awareness on cyber crimes, cyber laws and information security. Those honoured on the occasion by His Excellency the Governor, included Dr R.K. Raghavan, Padma Bhushan N. Vittal, R. Ramamurthy, M.Narendra, CMD of Indian Overseas Bank. IPS officials from the T.N. Police as well as the CBI - Bank Frauds Wing participated in the lecture sessions that followed the Tenth Year Anniversary celebrations.

Besides these events, as part of its commitment to the nation on spreading awareness, CySI also launched its CSAP (Cyber Security Awareness Programme) during its Cyber Security Workshop with the main intention to spread the knowledge about cyber crimes especially among the youth, non-tech-savvy and general users of the Internet and emails including ATMs and Internet Banking. This program often customized to suit the level of the participants is a much sought after one, with many non-engineering and Arts and Science colleges requiring conducting of such one-day programmes. CySI has conducted abridged versions of the programme even for the secondary and higher secondary level shool students, who have become very avid users of the Internet especailly social networking sites like Facebook. CySI officials have addressed many schools with participation from students in their early teens, who CySI feels is the most vulnberable segment of social networking site where awareness on the criticality and risks in information sharing has to be spread.
