About me

I’m a full-time student pursuing a nursing degree while working as a full-time caretaker to a young woman in a persistent vegetative state. In my spare time, I find pleasure in hiking and spending time outdoors. According to an article published by Harvard Health, spending time outdoors has many proven benefits for the human body, including increased levels of Vitamin D, which helps in preventing certain diseases like osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, and depression. I have a deep interest in music since at a young age. I enjoy singing and playing a few musical instruments like the piano, violin, and guitar. I perform mostly in the pop genre, but I enjoy listening to a variety of other genres including, vocal genre, reggae, hip hop, R&B, and appreciate most of the genres in the contemporary music culture.

My Wikipedia interests

I am currently working on Wikipedia as a project assignment for an English class at my local college. Moving forward, I am interested in contributing to Wikipedia, starting with simple elements like fact-checking, as well as adding images and additional references to existing Wikipedia pages. In the future, I would love to become a volunteer in creating or editing Wikipedia pages for lesser-known historical figures.

Article evaluation

A few months ago, I adopted a small dog that was rescued from a dog meat trade farm in South Korea. Because of this, the past few months I have been interested in following the work of the organization that saved my little companion. Besides the fact that I think they deserve a true and well-written Wikipedia article, I think it is important for other people that have the same interest, to have a better understanding of their organization and the important work that they do. I visited the Humane Society International (HSI) article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the lack of reliable citations, missing information, and a few biased claims that were made on the article.

Citations

Multiple claims were made in the article without having proper citations. The article claimed that HSI is the largest animal protection organization in the world. Although they have a large number of supporters, HSI does not claim to be the largest organization. Currently, the largest animal protection organization in the world is PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). I also found just the two citations in the reference section. One was recent and valid from the New York Post, but another led me to a page on the HSI website that was no longer available.

Structure

The Humane Society International has multiple divisions, including one in Australia and another in the United States. The only one written about as a subtopic in the Wikipedia article was the HSI Australia division. The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is a large division that should have had a subtopic written about in the article as well.

Voice

Generally, the tone of the article was neutral. However, there are certain claims made in the article that lacked neutrality. One of the biases shown in the article was a quote taken from the New York Post article. Although the quote was properly cited from a reliable source, the quote lacked neutrality and could potentially lead a debate between animal lovers and trophy hunters. The quote was suggesting that trophy hunting is an outrage, which indicated the author was siding with animal lovers.

Summary

In my opinion, the overall quality of the article is below average. The missing citations are a big factor as to how reliable this article is. Many claims were made in the article, but I only found two citations in the reference section. The missing HSUS division subtopic misleads the reader to think that HSI only has the two divisions. Lastly, the article needs a little improvement to remove bias and meet the Wikipedia policies standard.
