Pagla Jame Masjid, (Bengali: পাগলা জামে মসজিদ, Sylheti: ꠙꠣꠉꠟꠣ ꠎꠣꠝꠦ ꠝꠌ꠆ꠌꠤꠖ), known locally as Raypur Boro Masjid, (Bengali: রায়পুর বড় মসজিদ, Sylheti: ꠞꠣꠄꠚꠥꠞ ꠛꠠ ꠝꠌ꠆ꠌꠤꠖ), is a mosque in Raypur, West Pagla, South Sunamganj, Sunamganj District, Bangladesh. It lies on the banks of the Mahashing River. It was built by a local businessman called Yasin Mirza.[1]
History
[edit]After travelling and admiring buildings around the subcontinent, in particular Kolkata, a local businessman named Yasin Mirza decided to build a mosque in his local town of Raypur. Groundbreaking took place in 1924 and construction in 1931. It took 10 years to complete. Yasin Mirza hired architects and builders from cities of the British Raj such as Calcutta and Delhi. The main architect was Mumin Astagar, a descendant of one of the architects of the Taj Mahal. During this period, Mumin was living in Dacca.[2]
Description
[edit]It is a two-storey building. In front of the building is a large eidgah. There is a gate on the north side, The building has the same length and width which is 21ft and 6in. The width of the verandah is slightly above 3ft wide. It has four domes. It has one large dome on the main building and three smaller domes on the verandah. There are 15 doors and windows, almost equal in size. The thickness of the walls are all roughly 5ft apart from the western wall which is about 10ft. It has six decorative pillars in the four corners of the main hall and two corners of the verandah. There is large pond behind the mosque.
