The Urbanworld Film Festival launched in August 1997 by Stacy Spikes, a former executive at Miramax Films. Since its inception, Urbanworld has presented over 500 features, shorts and documentaries, with estimated attendance reaching 30,000.

The Urbanworld Film Festival is the largest internationally competitive festival of its kind. The five-day festival includes feature, documentary, short film and music video screenings, as well as panel discussions, live staged screenplay readings and the celebrated Actor’s Spotlight, with previous honorees including Vondie Curtis Hall, Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Dee Williams and Rosie Perez.

Over the last decade, Hollywood studios have consistently chosen Urbanworld to premiere box office and award-winning hits, including: Hustle & Flow, Collateral, The Best Man, Soul Food, Roll Bounce, The Fighting Temptations, Drumline, Hero, The Woodsman, Rush Hour 2, O, The Original Kings of Comedy, Hoodlum, HBO Films’ Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Blue Streak, Paid in Full, Hair Show, Out of Time, and more. The Urbanworld Film Festival is an initiative of the Urbanworld Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to redefining the role of multicultural constituents in contemporary cinema by implementing programs and events that support the development and success of the urban filmmaking community.
