Edward V (2 November 1470 – 1483) was de jure King of England from 9 April to 25 June 1483.

Early years (1470–1483)

Edward was born on 2 November 1470 in Westminster Abbey, the son of Edward IV of England (r. 1461–1470, 1471–1483) and his wife Elizabeth Woodville. At the time of his birth, Edward's father was in exile due to the restoration of Henry VI (r. 1422–1461, 1470–1471) as king of England. The baptism of the prince was held in the Abbey; its abbot stood as his sponsor. Edward IV managed to regain control over the kingdom in 1471, and created his son prince of Wales and earl of Chester on on 26 June. On 3 July, the lords spiritual and temporal of Parliament acknowledged Edward as heir and took an oath of allegiance. Five days later, a council was organised to oversee Edward's household and lands until he reached the age of fourteen. It was managed by Queen Elizabeth and Edward's uncles – George, Duke of Clarence; Richard, Duke of Gloucester; and Anthony, Woodville Earl Rivers. On 17 July, Edward was bestowed grants from the principality of Wales, the counties of Chester and Flint, and the duchy of Cornwall; the prince was unable to derive revenue from the lands until November 1472. On 20 February 1473, the council was expanded and was allowed to make decisions in Edward's name. On 10 November, Bishop John Alcock was tasked with the prince's education, and the Earl Rivers was designated as his governor.

Edward was knighted on 18 April and installed as a knight of the Garter on 15 May. He was appointed keeper of the realm on 20 June 1475 during Edward IV's sojourn in France. As the historian Rosemary Horrox states, "From 1476 Edward's council, based at Ludlow, developed into the main agent of royal authority in Wales and the marches"; the prince was not confined there: in May 1481, Edward travelled with his father to Sandwich for an inspection of a naval fleet, and in early 1483 he was intended to make a visit to Queen Elizabeth in Canterbury, but the plans were cancelled due to an outbreak of measles.

As part of projected political alliances, several marriages were proposed for Edward. In 1476-1467, a match was discussed between Edward and Isabella, the daughter of the Catholic monarchs in Iberia; other potential brides included a daughter of the Duke of Milan and Kunigunde, sister of Maximilian of Austria. In 1480, negotiations commenced regarding a match between Edward and Anne, heiress to the duchy of Brittany; the marriage treaty was confirmed the following year by the childrens' fathers.
