History
[edit]Following World War II, the school opened in 1959 as Johnston Middle School, named after general Albert Sidney Johnston, to serve the Meyerland/Westbury area.
In 1985, Johnston became a magnet school for performing arts, offering programs such as beginning, intermediate, and advanced art, broadcast journalism, theater arts, dance, band, jazz, choral music, orchestra, guitar, piano, and mariachi.
Johnston was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education.
In 2016, the school's name was changed from Johnston Middle School to Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School due it's Confederate ties.
In April 2018, a social media threat posted by a student prompted extra security measures for the day.
In March 2023, an arson incident in which a fire in a restroom caused by a student lighting toilet paper on fire caused $50,000 in damages and a week of school to be cancelled.
Sports
[edit]The teams are known as "Greyhounds" for boys and "Lady Greyhounds" for girls. Meyerland offers a wide variety of sports, including baseball, football, soccer, cross country, track, swim, softball, basketball, and volleyball. They also have a cheerleading team.
