Automobiles, are, at present, the most commonly used mode of transportation in Malaysia, as the highest and fastest growing numbers concentrated in urban centres in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are also a major component in Malaysian road transport. Until the 1970s, full size motorcycles increasingly made up the bulk of two-wheel transport alongside bicycles during the mid-20th century. While motorised transport led to the decreasing dependence of bicycles, the introduction of underbones led to a boon in the motorcycle market, resulting in underbones forming the vast majority of motorcycles in Malaysia in urban and rural areas. Scooters, introduced during the 1950s and 1960s following the launch of the Vespa in 1946, also enjoy modest popularity.

The high number of motorcycles in Malaysia led to a few minor accomodations on Malaysia expressways. Among them, motorcycle lanes in parts thereof, exemption from paying toll fees, and the introudction of motorcyclist shelters from the rain in the wake of major road accidents involving sheltering motorcyclists.
