Weebism is a fake religion attempting to make fun of a subculture mainly focused on the west side of the world that is usually called Weeaboo (shortened to Weeb), also known as Japanophile. While the exact number of followers is not known, it is thought that there are more Weeaboos who's age is around 12-40 years.[1] A Weeaboo is someone who holds the belief of being Japanese or is obsessed with the Japanese culture while only gaining knowledge of Japan through Japanimation or anime.[2] This, of course, makes the person in question seem idiotic, while the Weeaboo thinks he is 100% Japanese.
Practices
[edit]Holidays
[edit]There are different "holidays" a Weeaboo may participate in. Some holidays are more like festivals, where a bunch of Weebaoos will gather up to sell, cosplay as, show off all their anime goods. There are plenty of different variety of conventions around the world that anyone could attend and have fun at. These conventions are huge events with plenty of interesting characters to see and usually happens once a year. Some of the biggest anime conventions include AnimeExpo, AnimeFest, and Animethon.
Dietary Restrictions
[edit]Most of these dishes are considered to be "purely Japanese". Weeaboos tend to only eat Japanese cuisine. Some of the foods considered by Weeaboos to be Japanese are things such as instant noodle ramen, and a dessert called Pocky.
Beliefs
[edit]Most Weeaboos believe that all information on the Japanese culture will come from anime, and once they have watched anime, they can perfectly replicate any behavior that would deem someone "Japanese". A Weeaboo will think they are Japanese while others will think they're insensitive to the culture. A Weeb while try to speak Japanese, like adding words such as Kawaii, or Desu, but will make no sense to someone who is from actual Japanese decent.
Worship
[edit]This part of the article explains the different sign of worship that a "Weeb" has which identifies them as a part of this religion.
Waifu/Husbando
[edit]A Waifu/Husbando[3] is a fictional character from a visual media such as anime, manga, and video games that one is attracted to and considers a significant other. The origin of this word is believed to have come from the anime "Azumanga Daioh" that was released in 2002. The word was first used in episode 15 by a male in the show named "Mr. Kimura".
Rough Translation of the scene:
TAKINO Tomo: What's this? A picture of a woman?
KASUGA Ayumu: Wow, she's beautiful.
TAKINO Tomo: Who is she?
KIMURA: My wife.
All: That can't be!
Sacred Text
[edit]A Manga[4], is a Japanese style of comic book, and graphic novel, typically aimed towards adults and children, and is commonly read from back to front opposed to front to back. Some of the most popular Manga's to date are One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Bleach. A Weeaboo will usually read these types of books on an almost daily basis as it is one of the most important reading materials to a Weeaboo.
Anime
[edit]Anime artists have many distinct visual styles
Anime is a hand-drawn or computer animated animation style. The word anime is believed to be an abbreviation of the word "Japanese". In Japan, it refers to animation all around the world, but outside of Japan, it refers to only animation from Japan. Other words used include Japanese animation, or just Japanimation. A man named "Osamu Tezuka" is the man who popularized anime with works such as Astro Boy. Now there are over 430 animation studios in Japan with plenty of different genre like Action, Harem(multiple girls/boys like one boy/girl), Fantasy, etc. Now there are over 10,000 anime in the world with more coming out each week with works that came out as early as 1996 like Cased Closed, and One Piece being one of the most popular anime in the world.
Tenants
[edit]These are the 5 commandments given to us by our Japanese brethren.
- Thou shalt love their Waifu.
- Thou shalt use Japanophile language at every opportunity.
- Thou shalt prioritize anything Japanese over others.
- Thou shalt watch anime every day of the week.
- Thou shalt watch subs, not dub.
History
[edit]The Beginning
[edit]Believe it or not, the term "Japanophile" was not originally used to identify someone acting "Japanese". It was first used in early 18th to 19th century before foreign exchange between Japan. Two men Carl Peter Thunberg and Philipp Franz von Siebold had introduced Japanese art and objects to Europe and it had spiked interest. Lafcadio Hearn[5], an Irish-Greek author who lived in Japan in the 19th century was described as "a confirmed Japanophile" by a man named "Charles E. Tuttle Company" in a bunch of his books.
The New Art Form
[edit]In the year 1917, the first anime ever created has been released going by the name "Namakura Gatana". Three men, known now as the "founding fathers" of anime are responsible for creating this art form, there names are Ōten Shimokawa, Seitarou Kitayama, and Junichi Kouchi. Once Walt Disney had released the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Japanese animators had become inspired with the success of this movie, and decided to make their own. The style we see today, had became popular in the 1960s. Efficiency was one of the most important things to do. So a man named Osamu Tezuka, later to be known as the "God of Manga" had modified the animation of Disney to cut costs and save time. Even if he is known now as the "God of Manga", he is also credited for creating the main elements found in modern anime. He had created the concept of "Mecha" which became popular in the 1980s with anime such as Gundam, Daimos, Gigantor, and many more. He is also believed to be the first artist to draw characters with big eyes, being inspired by American images of Betty Boop, and Micky Mouse. Tezuka was so popular that he even has a Manga museum dedicated in his honor in Osaka, Japan. He had popularized works such as Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Black Jack which remain popular to this day. The term anime started to be used in the 1970s. While no one knows where it really came from, some believe it came from the way Japanese people pronounce "animation" while others believe it came from the way it's said in French "dessin anime". By 1980 to 1990, anime had become mainstream as it was spread around the world.
The Final Decision
[edit]The word "Weeaboo" was first coined in a nonsense comic called "The Perry Bible Fellowship" without any given meaning. It wasn't until 2005, thanks to the word filter, that Weeaboo was given it's meaning and popularized through a site called 4chan. The term "Weeaboo" has then replaced the old term "Wapanese" (A join between the words "white" or "wannabe" and "Japanese") which is used to insult someone who has been deemed overly fond of the Japanese culture, mostly in anime, manga, or hentai (the anime industry equivalent of porn.
Major Denominations
[edit]There are many different divisions of this religion, each having their own God(Waifu) which they worship the most, and believe to be "The One True God". While these branches have more or less people in each, they all have a deep love for their God, and will sometimes even shed blood for them. Here are some examples of these different sections in the religion.
Haruhiism
[edit]Haruhiism is a religion based around a highschool student named Haruhi Suzumiya. Although there is a lot of debate on this character being the one true or god or not is frequent, we all agree that Haruhi being bored is always bad. There are different views on how to properly worship this divine being, so there are different Haruhiists (Name given to those who follow this religion) that decide to do what they think is right. Some believe Haruhi is an incarnation of God, while others believe that they shouldn't devote all their theological devotion to Haruhi. Whenever a Haruhiists attempts to convert someone to their religion, they start to scream "There is no god but Haruhi and Nagaru Tanigawa is Her prophet." The prayer in this religion is unique as in, you have to dance.
Some commandments are also given in the holy text given by the prophet Nagaru Tanigawa:
- Thou shalt entertain your god.
- Thou shalt not be bored.
- Thou shalt keep holy the Sabbath (the day they get new episodes).
- Thou shalt enjoy costume-raping.
- Thou shalt be a lolicon.
- Thou shalt love boobies
- Thou shalt have no other God other than her.
- Thou shalt not worship other gods
- Thou shalt obey Haruhi and all she demands.
- Thou shalt be Haruhi's slave.
- Thou shalt not tell the goddess she is god.
There is much more to this religion that would make it unique but these are the main important points to it.
Other
[edit]There are many other religions based off of anime characters and other religions who have a bunch of followers who obey the rules placed down by the religion and do everything to show off their love for their God.
