Tudor Minstrel was a thoroughbred race horse foaled in 1944. With well known parentage it became Britain's top 2-year old colt in 1946 and won the 2000 Guineas, with Sir Gordon Richards as jockey as a 3-year old. It failed to win The Derby it was said due to the extra distance involved but that still made it good enough to be one of the horses chosen to have its name confered on a steam locomotive. The L.N.E.R. 4-6-2 Class A2, designed by A.H. Peppercorn, were given names of race horses, like the Gresley A3 class before them and No. 528 was allocated "Tudor Minstrel". It was not, however, outshopped from Doncaster Plant until British Railways days and carried the number 60528.
A bit more of me...... Born and bred in the former West Riding of Yorkshire in a coal mining and steel producing community, joining the staff of a Sheffield steelmakers and engineers after leaving school. Having been made redundant three times as the Sheffield steel industry disappeared beneath my feet I kept working and I am now a well-established freelance tour manager working in many countries in Europe.
I have been interested in railways from my early teens and I have developed a strong historical base and a small collection of items relating to the subject which I have made available to locally based authors over the years.
