Arizona Women in Tune (AZWIT) is a GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) member lesbian/feminist (non-audition) choir located in Phoenix, AZ. Founded in 1993, AZWIT to celebrate women, women musicians and women songwriters. AZWIT is a community chorus with a great presence in the Valley of the Sun arts community, as well as the international LGBT choral movement. They perform three subscription series concerts each season, as well as participating in several local community festivals each year. The singers are diverse in age, ethnicity, race, physical ability, sexual orientation and economic and life experience. Originally called TLC with 10 singers, TLC gave her first performance at the Arizona Central Pride Festival in June, 1993 using music books discarded by the conductor’s elementary school. They sang Our Call is for Freedom, Our Song is a Song of Peace and thus began the public journey of 60+ voices. TLC changed their name to Arizona Women in Tune in 1999, choosing a name that reflected not only their desire for musical perfection, but a desire to be a strong community “in tune” with each other. A journey that has, to date, included two international choral festivals and numerous performances throughout Arizona.[1]
Mission Statement
The Mission of Arizona Women in Tune is to increase lesbian visibility, to celebrate the accomplishments of women in music, and to passionately pursue artistic excellence.[2]
Lesbian Visibility - 18 years ago AZWIT began to defy the greater Phoenix community by performing as an out lesbian organization. AZWIT continues that challenge today. Historically, visibility of a female artist is rare; the visibility of a lesbian artist is virtually nonexistent. One of our primary goals it to spotlight those individuals. Women in Music - AZWIT celebrates women in music in several ways: by performing works by women composers and arrangers, works whose text is written by female authors and poets, providing opportunities for local women performing artists to join us in concerts to showcase their work and talent, and the act of taking the stage as Arizona Women in Tune honors the work that each of the singers and accompanist does as a choral musician.
Artistic Excellence- AZWIT strives to honor women in music and the gift of music through the pursuit of artistic excellence. The chorus presents powerful women-centered performances that bring a strong and vibrant lesbian voice to the Arizona arts community. ^ Herstory ^ Mission Statement reference 1 www.azwit.com "About Us",Herstory. reference 2 www.azwit.com "About Us","Mission Statement".
