Lancom Systems GmbH is a German manufacturer of professional network technology products, including VPN routers, gateways, wireless LAN controllers, and access points. Products from Lancom are aimed at customers in the private and public sectors.

History

[edit]

The company was founded in 2002 by Ralf Koenzen and Ulrich Prinz as a management buyout from the insolvent ELSA AG. It now has its headquarters in Würselen near Aachen, Germany.[1] The name Lancom Systems originated from the acquisition of the former ELSA business unit for professional communications technology, ELSA Lancom. The former consumer communications business unit of ELSA AG is today Devolo AG. The management board consists of the founding managing partner Ralf Koenzen and co-owner Stefan Herrlich, who joined the company in 2012.

Business units

[edit]

The products from Lancom Systems GmbH are produced by the two business units "Network Connectivity" and "Wireless LAN".

The core portfolio is completely developed and manufactured in Germany.[2]

The "Network Connectivity" unit produces Lancom's products and solutions for VPN site connectivity: Routers, gateways and clients. The core portfolio is supplemented by an extensive range of OEM switches.

In the "Wireless LAN" business unit, Lancom products provide wireless networks according to the IEEE 802.11 standard: WLAN access points for indoors and outdoors, WLAN controllers for managing wireless networks, and hotspot solutions for wireless guest access.

At the end of 2014, the product range was extended with components for radio-controlled digital signage, referred to by the manufacturer as Wireless ePaper Displays.[3]

At their headquarters in Würselen near Aachen, Germany, Lancom operates their own training and support center, where reseller partners and end customers can gain qualifications and receive technical support.

Development, production, and firmware

[edit]

The development and production of all Lancom routers, gateways, and wireless LAN products is carried out in Germany.[4] The products use a closed-source firmware, the Lancom Operating System (LCOS), which is also developed at the company headquarters in Wuerselen.[5] On their website, the company provides a signed document stating that all products are free of hidden access paths and other undesirable features for introducing, extracting or manipulating data.[6]

Awards and certifications

[edit]

ITSMIG was initiated in 2005 by the German Federal Ministries of the Interior and of Economics and Technology, and is today carried by TeleTrusT.
  • In 2013 Lancom received a security certification in accordance with the Common Criteria from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).[11] For their maximum security LCOS version 8.70CC, Lancom received the highest level of certification for commercial network products, CC EAL4+.
