Ports Victoria is an agency of the Victorian Government responsible for the strategic management and oversight of commercial ports in the state's waters. Initially combining the responsibilities of the Victorian Regional Channels Authority and Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne), Ports Victoria's ultimate jurisdiction will include channel management, safety oversight, and strategic governance for the commercial port operators.
History
[edit]After the commercial operations of the Port of Melbourne were leased to a private organisation in 2016 following a century of state control, the functions retained by the state government, including channel management and safety oversight, were exercised by the Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne) (VPCM). A separate body, the Victorian Regional Channels Authority, managed similar functions for the other commercial ports: Port of Geelong, Port of Portland (Victoria), and Port of Hastings.
