Appearance
The Metropolitan Ambulance Service was the Victorian Government provider of emergency medical services, pre-hospital care and patient transport to Melbourne, Australia, between 1986 and 2008. Formed by the merger of several smaller ambulance services, the MAS operated alongside public regional and rural ambulance services, most later absorbed into Rural Ambulance Victoria (RAV). MAS and RAV were merged to form Ambulance Victoria in 2008.
The provision of ambulance services in Melbourne was radically transformed during the MAS period, including the deregulation of non-emergency patient transport, privatisation of the ambulance dispatch system, and corporatisation of the broader public health sector.
