Since it's creation, Via Rail has had a variety of paint schemes. These paint schemes have given Via Rail it's identity, and have served as the public image for the passenger system.
Phase 1
[edit]Introduced in 1978, Phase 1 featured a blue, yellow, and black color scheme. The engines were painted mostly blue with a cab section. The top of the engine starting at the front windshield was painted black. A large yellow Via logo was painted on the side of the engine, and on some units, a red Via logo on the front. On passenger cars and B unit engines, The main blue and black color scheme was kept but with 2 horizontal yellow lines running along the lower half of the car. RDC cars would feature a yellow front with 2 blue lines running along the lower side with a thin yellow stripe in between them. This was Via Rail's only paint scheme until 1981 with the introduction of the LRC trainsets.
Phase 2
[edit]Introduced 1981 on the LRC trainsets, phase 2 was the 2nd major paint scheme used on Via Rail trains. The engines were painted mostly grey with a yellow cab. The lower part of the engine was painted blue. A thin yellow line was located on top of the blue with a thin grey stripe separating them. The Via logo was painted in yellow on the side. The passenger cars were painted in a matching paint scheme that continued the engine color scheme. This paint scheme was only painted on the LRC trainsets.
Phase 3
[edit]Introduced in 1987, this paint scheme was similar to phase 2. Engine were painted mostly grey with a yellow cab. A blue stripe was painted on the top half of the engine. A black mask was painted around the wind shield area. On the first variant, a black Via logo was on the front below the headlight and a yellow Via logo was on the lower back side of the engine. On the second variant, the front Via logo was moved above the headlight with a Canada logo below the head light. The blue stripe was made thicker with the Canada logo inside it. A Canadian flag was placed on the lower front half of the engine. On passenger cars, the blue stripe was painted just above the windows. The yellow Via logo was painted on the end of the car right next to the last window. The Canada logo was applied below the windows and the Canadian flag was put on opposite end to where the Via logo was. On some cars, a thin yellow stripe was painted above the blue stripe.

Phase 4(Renaissance)
[edit]Introduced in 2001, this paint scheme features a blueish green and yellow color scheme. The engines are painted grey with a blue green cover that covers the entire top half and cab of the engine. several yellow stripes the follow the curve of the blue green color border. A long yellow stripe runs the length of the engine after the blue green border. The Via Rail logo is located on the back end side of the engine. A red maple leaf logo is located right after the Via logo. Passenger cars feature a variety of different color patterns but all have the same blue green and yellow colors.
Phase 5
[edit]Via Rails newest paint scheme, Phase 5 features a grey, yellow, and red color scheme. The engines are painted in a grey base with a giant dark grey diagonal block stripe on the side. In front of the grey stripe, a black shape parallels the grey stripe and covers the side windows. 2 yellow stripes sit vertically on ether side of the wind shield. The stripes start above the ditch lights and extend upward and end at the back of the cab. The space in between the yellow stripes is painted all black. The area behind the grey stripe features a black stripe going down the middle end of the engine. A yellow stripe sits just above the black one, and a thin yellow line sits below the black stripe. A red maple leaf covers the bottom back end of the engine. A large Via logo was painted on the dark grey stripe. The passenger cars are painted to continue the engine paint scheme with the yellow black and grey color pattern.

This scheme features a silver base with a giant yellow Via logo that covers the entire front half of the train. For the Canada 150 variant, 4 multi colored city names were put on the back half of the train. A red rectangle logo with Canada 150 in white letters was put on the front half of the train. The 40 year variant of this paint scheme featured a red 40 logo with a maple leaf design separating the 4 and 0.
