The Air Bud film series, also known as Disney Buddies or Air Buddies, is an American film franchise based on a sports-playing golden retriever named Buddy, portrayed by Air Buddy.[1] The franchise began in 1997 with the theatrical release of Air Bud, followed by the theatrical release of Air Bud: Golden Receiver in 1998.[1][2] The rest of the films in the series were released in direct-to-DVD form. The Air Buddies or Disney Buddies spin-off series began in 2006 with the release of Air Buddies and it focuses on the adventures of Air Buddy's talking golden retriever puppies.[2]
As of May 2011, there are ten movies in the franchise, including five in the Air Bud series and five in the Air Buddies series. There is one Disney Buddies film slated for release in 2011, Spooky Buddies.[3][4][3]
Air Bud films
[edit]The first two films in the franchise were released in theaters, while later entries were released straight to DVD.
- Air Bud (1997) - Josh meets a golden retriever only to find out that he can play basketball.[5]
- Air Bud: Golden Receiver (1998) - Josh's golden retriever picks up football.[6]
- Air Bud: World Pup (2000) - Josh and Emma discover that Buddy's ball playing skills apply to Soccer.[7]
- Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch (2002) - Buddy makes the baseball team and becomes a star player.[8]
- Air Bud: Spikes Back (2003) - Buddy tackles volleyball.[9]
Air Buddies films
[edit]The Air Buddies films focus on Buddy's puppies, and they were all released straight to DVD.
- Air Buddies (2006) - Buddy and Molly's offspring work together to help each other while attempting to rescue their parents.[10]
- Snow Buddies (2008) - The offspring of Buddy and Molly go on an Alaskan adventure.[11]
- Space Buddies (2009) - The Buddies tag along for a field trip to the space museum and accidentally crawl aboard a rocket ship.[12]
- Santa Buddies (2009) - A puppy ventures out on his own, but after getting in trouble he needs to be rescued.[13]
- The Search for Santa Paws (2010) - When Santa is in trouble, the Buddies come to save Christmas.[14]
Upcoming films
[edit]As of May 2011, the following film has been confirmed for upcoming direct-to-DVD release.
- Spooky Buddies (2011) - The Buddies must travel to a mysterious old mansion to stop the Howlloween Hound and Warwick the Warlock.[3][5]
