A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build is a 2015 puzzle game developed and published by the indie studio Draknek & Friends. While its members Alan Hazelden and Benjamin Davis met a cafe developing their games, Hazelden suggested an idea for a seasonal game involving the player building a snowman. It was released for Linux, macOS, and Windows in February 2015, for Android and iOS in December 2015, and for the Nintendo Switch in September 2021.

Gameplay

[edit]

A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build is a grid-based puzzle game that tasks players with helping a featureless monster to build snowmen. Snowmen are built by stacking three snowballs of decreasing size. Rolling small or medium-sized balls over snowy ground increases their size. Building all snowmen in a room unlocks adjacent rooms which are all part of a hedge maze.

Players can undo one move at a time or reset a room.

Development and release

[edit]

A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build was developed by Draknek & Friends, a two-person indie studio composed of Alan Hazelden and Benjamin Davis. Hazelden previously created These Robotic Hearts of Mine, and Davis made Sushi Snake.[4] While the two met weekly at a cafe developing their games, Hazelden suggested a seasonal game where the player would build snowmen. The prototype was written with PuzzleScript in 2014, and Hazelden made the puzzles within a few days, focused on refining their graphics. The snowmen, designed by Davis, were named after people Hazelden knew.[5]

Showcased at Develop 2014,[6] A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build was released for Linux, macOS, and Windows on February 25, 2015.[7] While the game was planned to launch for Android and iOS devices in November 2015,[8] it was released a month later;[9][10][11][12] a subsequent version for the Nintendo Switch was released on September 2, 2021.[13][14]

Reception

[edit]

On Metacritic, A Good Snowman is Hard to Build received "universal acclaim" based on seven critics.[15] The game won the award for "Best Character Design" at Intel Level Up 2014,[16] and Time magazine included the game on their list of the 50 best apps in 2016.[17]
