The Wayne State University Department of Public Safety (also known as the Wayne State University Police Department or WSUPD) is the premier law enforcement agency responsible for protecting the campus of Wayne State University and it's surrounding areas. Founded in 1968, the department has seen tremendous growth since its inception.[1] The department currently employs over 50 commissioned officers and 16 uniformed, civilian cadets, to protect and serve the people within its area of responsibility.[2] The department consists of bike officers, a canine officer, patrol officers, traffic enforcement officers, investigators, communications controllers, records personnel and other support staff. WSUPD operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.[3] The members of the WSUPD are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and are sworn peace officers of the University and the City of Detroit.[4] The WSUPD prides itself on being able to respond to emergencies on its campus within 90 seconds of receiving a priority call. The department also offers many valuable community service outreach programs such as RAD, a Rape Aggression Defense class for women, a monthly "Campus Watch" email to keep university affiliates updated on the department's activities, bike locks and vehicle steering wheel locks known as "The Club" at cost, as well as VIN Etching and many other services.[5] Through these outreaches, the department enjoys a great working relationship with the community it serves. The hard work of the WSUPD allows Wayne State University to be one of the safest college campuses in the state.
