The murder of former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Irina Farion occurred on the evening of July 19, 2024 at 19:30 (GMT+3) in Lviv. An unknown man shot Farion in the head on the street near her home, after which she was hospitalized and died in the hospital at 11:30 p.m. local time. A criminal case has been opened.
Identity of the victim
[edit]Irina Dmitrievna Farion (Ukrainian: Ірина Дмитрівна Фаріон; April 29, 1964, Lviv, Lviv oblast, Ukrainian SSR, USSR — July 19, 2024, Lviv, Lviv oblast, Ukraine) was a ukrainian political and public figure, linguist. Ukrainian nationalist, member of the far-right «Svoboda» party, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada (2012—2014) from single-mandate constituency №116 in the Lviv region. Doctor of Philological Sciences (2015), Professor of the National University «Lviv Polytechnic» (1991—2023).
At the height of the russian-ukrainian war and before it began, she was known for her harsh statements about the russian language and russian culture. Also, during the presidential elections in Ukraine in 2019, she criticized the then candidate for the position of President of Ukraine from the «Servant of the People» party, Vladimir Zelensky, calling him a «bullhead» and his voters «morons». The woman’s last resonant statement was the spread of the russian language among the military personnel of the ukrainian Azov regiment, calling it «linguistic treason». Against this background, the Security Service of Ukraine opened four criminal cases against Irina Farion.
Course of events
[edit]On July 19, 2024, at about 19:30 local time, Irina Farion was on Masaryk Street near the building in which her apartment is located. According to witnesses, she left the building, then a man wearing gloves and holding a gun ran up to her and shot her once in the head, after which he quickly ran away. The shooter used a pistol without a silencer. While investigating the murder, investigators found a shell casing from the weapon used to fire the weapon.
The bullet hit the woman in the temple. At 20:00 local time, the victim was taken in extremely serious condition by paramedics to the St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Medical Unit of Lvov. At the same time, the assassination attempt on Farion became known on social networks. At the hospital, Farion immediately underwent surgery, which ended at 21:40, after which the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit. According to doctors, Farion was in a deep cerebral coma. However, despite the efforts of the doctors, three and a half hours after hospitalization, at 23:30, Farion died without regaining consciousness.
Murderer
[edit]According to residents of the deceased’s house, during the several weeks preceding the murder, a suspicious young man appeared near their house, approached the house in the morning, sat on a bench opposite Farion’s entrance, and sat there until the evening. The media published a photo of him, which shows that, despite the summer heat, he is wearing a black Panama hat, black ski goggles, sweatpants and a sweater with a red T-shirt with the inscription Los Angeles over it.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klimenko, subsequently confirmed that this man is the main suspect in the murder of Farion.
Investigation
[edit]A few hours after the official statements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine about the attempt on Farion, the National Police of Ukraine opened a criminal case, first under the article «Attempt», then reclassifying it under pt. 1 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine «Intentional Murder».
Versions
[edit]The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is considering two main versions of the motive for Farion’s murder. This could be either personal hostility or the socio-political activities of the murdered woman. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klimenko stated in his Telegram channel that traces of an assassination or even a «russian trace» could be found in the case.
